Dr. Comfort Shoe Fitting Guide

Understanding that fitting is more of an art than a science, this guide is to assist when fitting Dr. Comfort shoes.

The Dr. Comfort Brannock® device also correlates very closely with the fit of the shoes so it is recommended to use the Dr. Comfort Brannock® device for better fitting.

A Last (pictured) is the generic foot model which is similar to a human foot. The Last helps to determine the shape of the shoe including the length, width, depth, opening, toe spring, heel fi t, etc. There are essentially 7 different Lasts Dr. Comfort uses: Men’s Standard, Men’s Dress, Women’s Standard, Women’s Euro, Men’s Double Depth, Women’s Double Depth and Steel Toe.

Extra-Extra Depth Shoes—“X” Model Shoes Sometimes referred to as Double Depth, these are any shoe style with the “X” after the name is considered an extra-extra depth shoe because it has more depth in the toe box. These shoes are benefi cial for extra volume requirements due to deformities, AFO’s, or edema. The shoes fi t true to size but consider the depth when ordering. (Carter and Marla are also double depth).

Steel Toe Although the Protector boot fits on a similar last as the men’s EVA, due to the steel toe, the depth accounts for the extra room for the shoes.

    Women's

  1. Merry Jane/LuLu: An open top shoe can fit very roomy on a patient’s foot. It is recommended to order these styles at least one width narrower and, in some cases, one half size shorter. This shoe is not suitable for someone with a very narrow heel or someone with whom you suspect heel slippage may be a problem.
  • Flute/Paradise/Jackie: Similar to the Merry Jane and LuLu. These open top shoes have a snugger fitting heel than the other open top shoes which helps reduce heel slippage. These are still not recommended for someone with a narrow heel or extreme foot conditions
  • Annie/Marla: This shoe has a Lycra® upper and is designed for patients with hammertoes and bunions. Lycra® is a stretchable material and can make the shoe feel quite roomy. If you feel this shoe is loose, we suggest you order it one width narrower to achieve a more comfortable fit.
  • Betty: This shoe has two Lycra® strips that run distally on the sides of the shoe. This shoe is designed to stretch from plantar to dorsal. The throat of the shoe is more open and allows the foot to enter the shoe more easily. We suggest you order this shoe one width narrower for patients without a foot deformity to achieve a good fit.
  • Athletic and Boots: Although the standard measuring and fitting rules apply to these shoes, the thickness of the liner should be considered when fitting patients with these styles. The thicker liner may make these shoes feel snugger than some of the other styles.
  • Meghan: The standard measuring and fitting rules apply to this style but there is an additional feature that will help secure the fit of the heel. There is an extra loop at the top of the shoes just next to the last eyelets. This loop is connected to the heel of the shoe that allows for a running shoe fit.
  • Riley: Due to the well-padded inner lining of the shoe and the canvas upper material, it is recommended to order this shoe ½ size longer and possibly a wider width than measured.

  • Mallory: As a loafer style shoe, the fit tends to be a little roomier in the toe box and the strap on the top of the shoe is not as securing as a closure located closer to the ankle. The recommendation is to order this shoe in a ½ size shorter and possibly a width narrower.
  • Grace: This shoe has a comfortable padded collar which tends to fit this style a little snugger fit throughout the shoe. We suggest you order this style 1/2 size larger to achieve a comfortable fit.

    Men's

  • Patrick/Mike: These shoes have a lower heel counter than all of the other men’s shoes and as a result, do not push the foot as far distally. We suggest that you consider ordering one-half size shorter to achieve similar fit.
  • Brian/Carter: This shoe has a Lycra® upper and is designed for patients with hammertoes and bunions. Lycra® is a stretchable material and can make the shoe feel quite roomy. If you feel this shoe is loose, we suggest you order it one width narrower to achieve a more comfortable fit.
  • Douglas: This shoe has two Lycra® strips that run distally on the sides of the shoe. This shoe is designed to stretch from plantar to dorsal. The throat of the shoe is more open and allows the foot to enter the shoe more easily. We suggest you order this shoe one width narrower for patients without a foot deformity to achieve a good fit.
  • Jack/Classic/Frank/Ruk/Wing: (Dress Shoes) These shoes have a roomier toe box and a snugger fitting heel. They can be ordered one width narrower or a half size shorter to achieve a similar fit.
  • Athletic/Boots: Although the standard measuring and fitting rules apply to these shoes, the thickness of the liner should be considered when fitting patients with these styles. The thicker liner may make these shoes feel snugger than some of the other styles.

  • Chris: The standard measuring and fitting rules apply to this style but there is an additional feature that will help secure the fit of the heel. There is an extra loop at the top of the shoes just next to the last eyelets. This loop is connected to the heel of the shoe that allows for a running shoe fit.

Footnotes: Please remember you should not normally want to fit your diabetic patients either shorter or narrower than measured. However, by following these instructions, you will achieve a fit comparable to the other shoes in our line. It is also important to remember that when you are fitting patients that have narrow heels, it will be easier to accommodate their needs with a lace shoe.
